Sourcetree Bitbucket Authentication Failed: Two Highly Requested Features Arrive in 2019

For the past year, we've been actively listening to our Windows users and have been working tirelessly to bring you two of the most highly requested features of 2019. Today, we're excited to give you a sneak peek into what's coming next.

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve your experience with Sourcetree for Windows, we're introducing two significant updates that address common pain points and enhance overall usability. In this article, we'll provide an overview of the changes you can expect soon.

Deprecation of Atlassian Account Sign-in API

One year ago, we launched a new onboarding experience in Sourcetree 3.0 for both Mac and Windows, powered by Bitbucket login in your default browser. This change allowed us to provide a more seamless sign-in process. Today, we're announcing that we'll be deprecating the Sourcetree-specific portion of the Atlassian Account sign-in API.

This means that after , you will no longer be able to complete the registration and Atlassian Account portion of the Welcome Wizard. If you're unable to update your system before this date, you can download an applicable version of Sourcetree for Mac and follow the instructions below.

Mitigation Steps for Existing Installations

If you're currently using an existing installation of Sourcetree for Mac, there is no impact to your experience. However, we recommend performing the following steps in Terminal prior to launching the app:

1. Run `defaults write completedWelcomeWizardVersion 3`

2. Run `defaults write EmailHash DeprecatedEndpoint2019`

By taking these simple steps, you'll ensure a smooth transition and continue to enjoy an uninterrupted Sourcetree experience.

Why Are We Making This Change?

We're making this change to migrate users away from the individual endpoint and towards a more robust Atlassian Account experience overall. In early 2018, we introduced changes to the in-app registration process on Mac to use a new endpoint provided by the Atlassian Account team, allowing for a more seamless sign-in experience.
